Ground Defence - Avoiding Grappling

A.

.

The technique shown in this video is not concerned nor aimed for any competition because its target is not to score points or to get a submission.

It is aimed for self defence on the ground, to take out your attacker in the quickest way possible without resorting to grappling or wrestling – and moving yourself out of the area as quick as possible, confidently knowing the assailant will not chase after you.

Avoid MMA Mentality

Unlike in a dojo where you have time to warm-up, pick and choose who your training partner is and start all over again when you tap; in the streets, at home, in camp sites, etc things may happen when we least expect it. We may be:-

+ Laying down on the grass at the park,
+ Sleeping in tents at a camp site,
+ Fell down after an initial attack and do not have the chance to stand up,
+ Fell down and injured our leg – preventing us to stand up,

in such situations, it is good to know how to counter an attack without resorting to grappling where sand, stones, bottles or broken glass on the ground can be used against you.

There is a saying in the martial arts world propagated by grapplers, its “ 90% of all fights end up on the ground” – it may be true, it may be not, but if it does happen it does not mean that you have to use BJJ or grappling, does it?

Grappling Against Weapons

Unlike in competitions, in the streets we don’t know if the attacker is carrying a knife or other weapons with him, there are no referees to stop the fight if you get stabbed or if you tap.

This is one such reason why grappling or wrestling with your attacker is best avoided when you face such situation that you accidentally end up on the ground.

Not bad mouthing any martial arts, just stating the facts, we all know that a majority of practitioners (not all) who are excellent grapplers are competition-minded people, and do not have a clue about edged weapon defence on the street.

The Video

The posture invites attacks to the major parts of the body, i.e. the head or body. If the defender was to put his hand or leg up as a primary defence, then the attacker will have to attack your limbs first before getting to you. Not a good idea on the streets where hard-soled shoes like army boots or working boots could be used to kick your limbs away. Imagine your hand and ankle being kicked with a hard boot repetitively, would you still have a clear mind to defend yourself?

Place your limbs within the path of the attack not between it.

Position your head and body within clear view of the attacker inviting him to a confident and committed attack.

As his attack is committed, his body weight will work against him. He will not be able to retract the kick; it is during this time that you redirect the kick controlling his centre-line and your balance.

Grab his knee cap and twist it clockwise toward yourself, this will unbalance him and drop him on the ground hard.

Finish him off with afew hard strikes. This is to delay his recovery so not to chase after you when you escape.

There are various drills to acquire this skill against different attacks - the video is just a small variation of how to defend from a direct straight kick.

My Views on Forums

.
Firstly I would like to thank you all those who has invited me to be a member of their forum and discussion sites. It is an honour to be invited personally by the moderators.

I have read a number of good and some bad comments on SSBD in a few threads. The Good ones I take them with my humble respects from highly trained instructors who has taught and known internationally – some I have worked with. While the bad ones that try to put my family art down either tend to be those who prefer to remain anonymous hiding behind false names or those “wanna-be” who only trains in a few martial arts classes in their small town or watched a few instructional DVDs and think they know everything there is to know about any fighting art in general.

I try not to get caught into arguments of “my kung fu is better than yours” because unless the person you are corresponding with on the other side of the screen knows half of what they are talking about and has the stuff to back it up with, these people are just a waste of time and their comments are nothing more than jelousy and insecurity about their ability – which is common in any profession anywhere in the world.

Unlike a food critique who is paid to do their job, what other reason does anyone try to disrespect or put down another person he has never met?

Through invitation, I have travelled and trained with professionals, Instructors and practitioners of different nationalities from different martial arts and systems, regardless if it’s a Military System, Japanese system, Chinese system or Malay system. We exchange ideas for the betterment of each other. A good practitioner in any fighting system tries to improve on his abilities by being open to other training methods, while those that have big egos and claims to be all knowing prefers to troll in forums and try to start arguments behind a computer screen.

On Youtube

As anyone can read from my youtube channel, I do not delete or sensor any comments as long as it does not involve racism and slandering religion. Quite frankly the bad comments really expose the closed-minded characters of the individuals who wrote it; they just watch through a short 3 minute clip without even reading the video description. Should I even try to convince them otherwise?

On Forums

Although I have registered in a few forums sites on invitation, I have NEVER yet joined any discussions in any forum. Anyone whose name is associated with Silat Suffian Bela Diri in any forum, discussion board or video sites is NOT me, although Im not saying that I will never post anything in the future - If I do, it will be under my own name.

Regarding SSBD, other than submitting an articles to “Silat Now! E-Zine”, I ONLY post my articles and videos in http://www.silat-suffian.blogspot.com/
and www.youtube.com/maul565, I personally manage these two sites.

I do not have negative thoughts about forums and discussion boards, my admiration for who has presented their arts and systems well in them and wish for their continued success.

Please do not take any of my words negatively, mistakes or harsh words that I may have made in this article is entirely of my own and does not reflect the view of my instructors or others that work and train with me.

Best regards and respects to all,
Maul Mornie
