THE REVIEW
.
Guru Maul Mornies first SSBD Seminar in the West Country finally took place at The Beachcomber Inn, Brean, 5th OCTOBER 2008.

.
32 Martial Artists from various disciplines, Wing Chun, Kenpo, Kali, MMA and Wado Ryu were in attendance. To be honest not many of these attendees had heard of Maul before this seminar but after 4 hours in his company I can assure you they will never forget what they witnessed and in some cases felt!

.
Maul took us through the skeleton drills of the 4 angles of a committed attack with a knife. His instruction as usual was clear, systematic and structured in order to give all practitioners a chance to develop the muscle memory required for SSBD and to desensitise the fear of the blade. .

SSBD is different to other systems that I have come across in that it places a much greater emphasis on Awareness, Mentality and Principles rather than hundreds of fancy techniques. After an hour and a half of these drills and the basic principles we were led in to entries and counter attacks.
.
This is where SSBD excels in its simplicity and effectiveness. Its subtle use of hand techniques coupled with clever footwork and trapping is the best I have seen. The top half of the body works in harmony with the lower half and the techniques can be applied with great force or by more subtle means almost like Aikido or Systema. For the onlooker everything seems accidental and clumsy and this makes it an ideal system for Law enforcement or Security personnel who have to be careful of litigation and allegations of heavy handedness.

The last hour was simply awesome; Maul showed us techniques from the sub level Crocodile system which covers ground work and grappling. I had seen some of this on You Tube, but to see it in the flesh was spine tingling, his knowledge of all aspects of fighting ranges was truly unbelievable. Seasoned Martial Artists left the Seminar shaking their heads in disbelief and dumbstruck at the effectiveness of SSBD. Maul also seems to make a point of demonstrating his techniques on the bigger guys in order to prove it is technique and not strength that makes the system work so well.
.
I have attended 4 of Mauls seminars and this for me was the best of the lot.
Many of the attendees were known personally to me and they are hardcore Martial Artists who are not easily impressed. My reputation was as much on the line as Mauls for this seminar but Maul delivered big time. Feedback was 100% positive and believe me the next Somerset seminar will be crammed full after this taster.
.
Thank you Guru Maul, my teacher, my friend, my inspirer.
